All of us were created with a built in need for purpose. Scripture says that God himself set eternity in the hearts of man ( Ecclesiastes), and with eternity set in our hearts, there is a longing for something more. Sadly, we grow up looking for that “something more” in people, places and things.
Still, the nagging that we haven’t found “it” moves us and keeps us searching. As believers we often keep searching and searching for the next “new” thing, in order to be fulfilled, find power, or find blessing. The trouble is, the purpose that we were created for comes not by searching here and there and not from running from message to message, but by settling down with the CORE of the message of the gospel. We were created to know Christ and our purpose on this earth is to be transformed by His love, and this happens as we are conformed into His image through daily dying more and more to self.
Paul’s purpose was to know Christ.
Philippians 3:10
“That I may know him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.”
John 12:24
“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”
Lord,
Today I come to you and ask that I might know you. This is a big request for me because it makes me afraid that I will have to go through many things to know you in a way that truly produces fruit. I do not want to go through things Lord. Sorry, but I just don’t. However, I see that going through things is part and parcel of life. So transform me by your power, so that I may GROW through the things in life rather than just go through them kicking and screaming. And, as I die daily, a little here a little there, make me useful for the purposes you have ordained me for since the beginning of time.
Amen
Dear kernel of wheat, ( aka…your name here)
I know times are hard right now, but something is at work in you, even now. As your life falls into the ground of My love for you…and yes, as you die to self, many many seeds will be planted and much fruit will grow. If you live to self…strong and sufficient in self, you will remain only ONE. But if you die, you become much.
